“One of the challenges of data visualization is maintaining the spirit of the information and not over-distilling it. This chart made me buy cupcakes (marketers, take note) so it must have done something right. A greater man would have made cupcakes, in accordance with the chart, but a baker I am not. However, such a man could follow this chart and end up with a delicious batch of cupcakes, I would imagine. The Anatomy of a Cupcake is one in a growing number of recipe charts, many of which remove the precision and measurements of traditional recipes in favor of expressing their general form. As somebody who easily gets obsessed with measurements while cooking, filling the teaspoon of salt to the grain, recipes presented in this form feel closer to how I imagine anyone with actual cooking acumen approaches the metonymic kitchen…”
